Professional Governance: Another New Concept?

Professional Governance: Another New Concept?

In this 2017 guest editorial for the Journal of Nursing Administration, Dr. Robert Hess responds to recent claims that the field should “move from shared to professional governance” as though the concept were new. Hess, who originally defined professional governance in his 1998 doctoral research and developed the field’s most widely cited measurement instruments, traces the term’s history and argues that shared governance remains a proven, essential component within the broader professional governance continuum. Rather than rebranding established concepts, the editorial makes the case for interprofessional shared governance models and a continued focus on leadership sharing and empowerment over terminology.
