Jaynelle Stichler is a professor of nursing at San Diego State University and healthcare design researcher with more than 25 years of executive experience in nursing leadership and shared governance.

Academic and Editorial Roles

Jaynelle serves as a professor of nursing at San Diego State University, School of Nursing, College of Health & Human Services. As Concentration Chair for the Nurse Leadership in Healthcare Systems, she teaches graduate classes in Nursing and Health Services Administration. She is also the founding co-editor of Health Environments Research and Design (HERD) journal. In addition, she authors columns in the Journal of Nursing Administration on the nurse leaders’ role in evidenced-based healthcare design and in The Journal of Nursing for Women on Leadership. Beyond her academic work, Jaynelle serves as the Research and Professional Development Consultant at the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns and Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Research

Jaynelle’s research trajectory focuses on the effect of the work environment (both physical environment and organizational characteristics) on organizational performance and the provider and patient experience. As principal investigator, she leads several studies including Understanding Workplace Stress Experienced by Nurse Managers (partially funded by the American Nurses Foundation) conducted with Dr. Lisa Kath and Dr. Mark Ehrhart, both organizational industrial psychologists from the College of Sciences; Safe Patient Mobilization Initiatives to Reduce Employee Injury (Sharp Mary Birch); The Effect of the Built Environment on Organizational Metrics and Patient and Provider Outcomes (Sharp Memorial); Transition to Practice Experiences among New Nurses (Sharp Memorial); and Enhancing the Evidence-based Practice Environment (Sharp Mary Birch).

Furthermore, Jaynelle serves as principal investigator for Understanding Workplace Stress Experienced by Nurse Managers (partially funded by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses [AWHONN]) and Faculty Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice and Perceived Barriers to Teaching Evidence-Based Nursing Practice to Students (partially funded by Sigma Theta Tau International, Gamma Gamma Chapter).

Executive Experience

With more than 25 years of experience as a healthcare executive, Jaynelle served as the vice president for the Women’s Service-Line for Sharp HealthCare System and the executive director for Women’s Services at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Through the Stichler Group, Inc., she consulted with more than 150 hospitals across the US and internationally for strategic planning, operational improvement, and healthcare facility design. Throughout her career, she has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and books and presents frequently at national conferences.

Education and Professional Affiliations

Jaynelle holds a BS and an MS in Nursing from the University of Arizona and a doctorate of Nursing Science from the University of San Diego. She also earned a certificate in Executive Leadership from the Peter Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate School. Her professional affiliations include the STTI Nursing Honor Society, the American Academy of Nursing (fellow), the American College of Healthcare Executives (fellow), the Western Institute of Nursing Research, International Academy of Nursing Editors, American Nurses Association, and AWHONN, to name a few.
